Regulations for domestic flights

As part of Germany's new Infection Protection Act, the 3G rule is now in effect for public passenger transportation. This means that all passengers traveling on a domestic German flight must have a negative Covid-19 test, a vaccination certificate or proof of recovery ready.

Regulations for entry into Germany

In general, all passengers (whether returning from a risk area or non-risk area) who wish to enter Germany by air, need to be tested and show proof of a negative Covid-19 test before departure (vaccinated and recovered persons are only affected by this testing requirement if they have been in a virus variant area within the last ten days, in all other cases proof of vaccination or proof of recovery is sufficient). Children under 6 years are exempted from the testing requirement. Further information can be found here.

In addition, the following rules apply to travelers returning from risk areas:

You must notify the local health department without delay by submitting a before entry completed arrival form through a entry portal. Carry the form with you at all times, either printed out on paper or stored on an electronic device, so that you can also show it to transportation providers or immigration authorities if asked to do so. If digital registration is not possible, in exceptional cases you must fill in a written substitute registration and hand it in to the carrier or the border authority. Returning travelers from all risk areas need to be able to provide the proof of the negative Covid-19 test no later than 48 hours upon request to the competent authority.

The following quarantine obligations apply to different risk areas:

  • High risk areas
    • Returning travelers who have met their test verification requirement by having a negative test result prior to departure, must go straight home or to other suitable accommodations immediately after landing in Frankfurt and quarantine yourself there for 10 days without interruption. You may end the quarantine five days after arriving in Germany by presenting a negative test result. However, you must wait for at least five days after arriving before taking the test (you may briefly interrupt your quarantine to take the test).
    • For travelers who have submitted proof of full vaccination against Covid-19 or proof of recovery through the entry portal, the quarantine will end early.
    • Children under 6 years the quarantine is obliged but ends automatically after 5 days without having a proof of a negative test.
    • The quarantine also ends automatically as soon as the affected area is no longer listed as a risk area.
  • Areas of variant of concern:
    • In general, all returning travelers (including children under 6 years) must go straight home or to other suitable accommodations immediately after landing in Frankfurt and quarantine yourself there for 14 days without interruption.
    • If, during the self-isolation period following entry into Germany, an area of variants of concern is downgraded to a high risk area, from the date of entry into force of the new classification, the end of self-isolation is governed by the regulations for high risk areas.

Go here for further information on exceptions to the quarantine requirement.

We urge departing passengers to obtain detailed information on the current immigration rules at their destinations and get tested well in advance if this is required.
