Security Check

Information about the security screening process

At the security checkpoint, you will be checked to ensure that you are not carrying any items that are prohibited in the security area of the airport or on the aircraft in accordance with EU and/or IATA guidelines.

You can avoid waiting times at security by following these instructions:

  • Leave small items such as keys or travel documents in your jacket or carry-on luggage.
  • Take off your jacket and belt and place both in the tray provided.
  • Pregnancy, pacemaker, shunt or valve supply (e.g., hydrocephalus, cochlear implant): Inform the security staff after placing your luggage and before passing through the gate probe.

Liquids and electronic devices

Liquids and electronic devices

At most security checkpoints in Terminal 1 and at all checkpoints in Terminal 3, modern CT scanners are in use. These allow for faster and more convenient screening of your hand luggage.

Therefore, you may carry liquids of up to 2 liters in your hand luggage. Packing them in a transparent, resealable bag is not required.

Electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, or cameras can also remain in your hand luggage during the security check.

Please note:

The previous regulations for liquids still apply at the following checkpoints:

  • Gates C1, C2, C4, C6 (see also below “Information for passengers departing from Terminal 1, Concourse C  ”)
  • Certain special security checkpoints in Terminal 1
  • Transfer checkpoints (for connecting passengers)

Here, liquids may only be carried in individual containers of up to 100 ml, packed in a transparent, resealable plastic bag with a total capacity of up to 1 liter.

Our tip:

Before your journey, check under “Departures” to find out from which gate you are departing. This way, you can pack your hand luggage according to the applicable liquid regulations.

  • In these areas, you and your carry-on luggage are checked just before you enter the departure gate
  • Please note that the special rules on carrying liquids and gels on board of the aircraft also apply in this case, including any purchased duty-free items.
  • If you are unsure whether you are allowed to carry a certain item in your hand luggage, contact your airline before leaving home to find out. It is a good idea to obtain written confirmation from the airline that the item in question is permitted.
  • If you are denied permission to carry an item through the checkpoint and there is enough time until your flight departs,  you may leave it in your car, turn it over to the airline to be carried as checked luggage, or give it to someone who has accompanied you to the airport but is not flying.
  • You can also have the objects placed in a special white bag at the checkpoint. In this case, you receive a claim slip that you can use to retrieve them after your return at one of the luggage storage offices (Baggage Storage) or arrange for them to be sent to you.

Please note that EU regulations may require transferring passengers to clear an additional security check in some parts of Frankfurt Airport.

Your boarding pass entitles you to purchase all perfumes, cosmetics, spirits, wines, confectionery, toys, and accessories at favorable duty-free prices in our Travel Value & Duty Free shops and to take them through security.

To do so, the items must be placed in a transparent bag sealed by the sales staff (known as an ICAO STEB) and accompanied by a receipt showing the date and place of purchase that is legible from the outside.

Please also note that the regulations governing liquids in third countries may differ from those in the EU. In particular, if you are transferring at Frankfurt Airport, your purchases must be kept in the sealed bags described above.

We therefore recommend that you check with the foreign representative office of the respective country before your flight to find out about the current liquid restrictions and import restrictions that apply there.Further information is available on the website of the  Federal Police.

Walking time displays

The information displays in both terminals list not only the current flight data and the departure gate, but also the time it takes to get there. One glance is enough to tell you whether you need one or five minutes. As soon as the gate for a flight has been determined, the travel times to it are displayed. The screens are located directly behind the security and passport controls.
