How do I transport my pet?
Not every airline will let you take animals with you. Please contact your airline or travel agency sufficiently in advance to find out.
A distinction is made between animals that may be taken in the cabin (PETC = “pet in cabin”) and animals that must ride in the belly hold (AVIH = “animal vivant in hold”). Which category applies depends on an animal’s size, weight, and species. Every animal must travel inside an appropriate transport container, which must be well-ventilated, impossible to escape from, and leak-proof. Your animal should have enough room to move and stand up inside it.
Where can I get a transport container for the flight?
The airport luggage service (FGS) will be happy to help you. It keeps containers for transporting animals and bicycles in stock. You’ll find the FGS in Terminal 1, Concourse B (departures level). Make sure to order a container in advance by calling +49 (0) 69 - 690 51211. You can then pick it up an hour or two before your flight.
Which documents do I need to travel with my pet?
To facilitate traveling with pets to holiday destinations or elsewhere, since 2004 an EU directive has required that a standardized “pet passport” must be carried for each animal. You can obtain this document from any practicing veterinarian who has been authorized by the veterinary health department to issue it. It contains information on your pet’s state of health and proof that it has been vaccinated against rabies.

Where can I pick up my pet after the flight?
All animals travelling as excess baggage (checked in at the airline’s counter) are labelled with a baggage tag. Upon arrival in Frankfurt, these animals can be picked up in the same arrival terminal as you pick up your bags. The delivery point for animals in Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 is the bulky baggage counter.
Animals travelling alone as Cargo shipment (eventually involving a cargo forwarding agent) are transported under an Air Waybill (11-digit number, i.e. 123-1234 5670) and have to be picked up at the Animal Lounge (Building 463, access via Gate 26).
Depending on the involved air carrier you might have to get to the airline’s cargo office first to pick up the freight documents.
