This romantic castle was built in the style of the castles that nobility once occupied in Germany. It is one of the most-visited castles in Europe.
This picturesque castle was built between 1869 and 1886 for King Ludwig II of Bavaria, although he died before it was completed. Because of its fairy tale-like appearance, it later served as the model for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.
The interior is also magnificently decorated. The Throne Hall and the Hall of the Singers, the two largest rooms, are especially impressive.
Tours of the castle are held in German and English. In addition, audio guides are available in French, Greek, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Slovak, Czech, Hungarian, Arabic, Korean, and Thai.
A visit to the nearby town of Hohenschwangau to see its castle and the Museum of the Bavarian Kings is highly recommended. It is surrounded by mountains, the Pöllat Gorge, and two lovely mountain lakes, the Alpsee and Forggensee.
