Cars & Technology

Technology lovers can get their fill in Hockenheim, Stuttgart, and Speyer.

Slip into the role of a racecar driver or admire the innovations of Mercedes and Porsche from their founding until today.

The Hockenheimring racecourse was inaugurated in 1932. It hosts prestigious car races including Formula One events. Cars can reach peak speeds of up to 330 kph on it. On race-free days, you can personally experience driving at high speed on the course.

If you want to catch a glimpse behind the scenes, there are tours in German and English. The Motorsport Museum also contains a collection of historic motorcycles and racecars, including a reconstruction of the world’s first motorcycle (Daimler Riding Car), which Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach built out of wood in 1885.

It’s worthwhile for car fans to make a trip to Stuttgart, which is the home of the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum. The former is located in Obertürkheim east of the city center. It traces the history of motor vehicles with more than 160 exhibits for visitors to marvel at. The most popular include the world’s two oldest cars, the first popemobile, and the original Daimler Riding Car (the world’s very first motorcycle).
