An estimated 130,000 aircrafts roll over our Südbahn each year. During the last couple of weeks, however, 100 trucks, 24 asphalt rollers, eight large milling machines and four special vehicles made the tarmac their home. Their mission: Giving the runway a make-over. In a very short time frame of only three weeks, the tarmac got a new surface layer and is looking all-new again. 200 workers took care of the project to renew the heavily used asphalt little by little – make way and get ready to see your favorite places again!
"Just like cars and trucks put a strain on heavily trafficked highways, airplanes use up the runway", project leader Axel Konrad explains. Even the so-called runway shoulders of the 60-meter-wide tarmac received a new surface. All in all, roughly 192,000 square meters have been renewed. To compare: That's as big as 27 soccer fields.
