New vacuum cooler makes FRA a more attractive site for importing flowers

Longer shelf life for flowers

March 5th, 2015: Frankfurt Airport has had a vacuum cooler since the end of last year. It ensures a longer shelf life for flowers, which means they can be safely transported to destinations located farther away.

A new vacuum cooler has been in operation at the Perishable Center GmbH & Co. Betriebs KG (PCF) at Frankfurt Airport since December 2014. The new technology ensures that products stay fresh considerably longer.

The vacuum cooler makes it possible to quickly return sensitive flowers and plants to their target temperature after long flights. Up to two aircraft pallets can be cooled down to a temperature of between 2 and 5 degrees Celsius within 20 to 30 minutes. Doing so slows the maturation process so the products stay fresh for longer periods.

Rainer Wittenfeld, Managing Director of PCF, says: “The service has been very well received. Our customers appreciate that the flowers are prepared in the best possible way for further transport.” The goods are cooled to retain their freshness so they arrive at their destination in top-quality condition. This improves their marketability and also benefits consumers, who get to enjoy the plants they purchase longer.
