Endangered species and plant protection

Rules for the protection of endangered species and plants.

There are strict rules on which endangered plants and animals may and may not be carried.

Protection of species

Strict rules are required to prevent many endangered plant and animal species from dying out completely. CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora) therefore specifies exactly which protected plants and animals may not be carried. In most cases, these may not be imported at all, or only if certain conditions are met. Violators are rigorously prosecuted and usually sentenced to severe penalties.

Plant protection

It is also prohibited to import certain plants, plant products from non-EU countries into the EU. The reason for the restrictions is that a wide variety of harmful organisms or diseases can be introduced with this material. Certain organisms can cause enormous damage to the flora in the country to which they have been introduced.
