Tips before Departing
Tell your children what happens before, during and after the flight, if they are old enough to understand it. You might want to tell them about good experiences you have had while flying or a nice story about it.
Take advantage of the many convenient offers such as check-in the day before, and make sure to reserve seats well in advance. You can push your stroller all the way to the gate and turn it over to the flight attendants just before departure.
Before you board the plane, get your kids to run and play as much as possible so they will sit quietly during the flight. For instance, you can explore the terminal together or visit the playgrounds. It is also exciting for children to watch the planes taking off and landing. That way they won’t get bored.
Pack everything that your children will need while on holiday in your carry-on luggage. That includes not only toys and games and their favorite books, story and music cassettes, but also appropriate clothing and toilet articles. To help them avoid pain in the ears when the plane descends for landing, take chewing gum and drops, which gets the saliva flowing and makes them swallow. Also carry important medicines with you. If your child has a cold when you depart, and especially if he or she has an earache, consult your pediatrician beforehand.
Don’t eat any heavy food before flying. Instead, take some light snacks along for your kids.
