Currency checks are carried out when entering EU countries to prevent money derived from illegal transactions and criminal activities from being brought in.

Currency Checks When Traveling Within the European Union

When traveling between countries of the European Union, if you are carrying cash or cash equivalents worth 10,000 euros or more you must orally declare it to the customs officials.

You Must Declare the Following:

  • Cash (coins and bills)
  • Cash-equivalent documents (stock certificates, bonds, checks or traveler's checks, orders to pay, letters of credit, promissory notes, matured interest coupons)
  • Precious stones
  • Precious metals

Currency Checks When Traveling to or from Non-EU Countries

If you travel from the European Union to a non-EU country or from a non-EU country to the European Union, you must declare any cash and cash equivalents exceeding 10,000 euros. This must be done in writing to the responsible customs office.

When arriving from a non-EU country you may submit the written declaration at the designated red exit for goods to declare after the luggage claim area. When departing for a non-EU country, please follow the signs to the responsible customs office or ask for the customs counter where you can submit your written declaration.

The following must be declared:

  • Cash (coins and bills)
  • Checks
  • Traveler's checks
  • Orders to pay
  • Letters of credit
  • Promissory notes
  • Stock certificates
  • Bonds
  • Matured interest coupons
